A History of the Eminent Southeastern Psychologists Symposium

In 1992, W. Harold Moon established a symposium about eminent women psychologists in the southeast, and for the next few years, he organized similar symposia. The people about whom papers were presented and the presenters in the Eminent Women in Southeastern Psychology Symposia are listed in Table 1.

The Southeastern Psychological Association (SEPA) Executive Committee decided in 2000 that the symposium should become an official component of the annual program and that the symposium should be a part of the SEPA History Project. The Executive Committee also decided that the scope of the symposium should be expanded to include eminent psychologists who are men and that the name should be changed. The people about whom papers  have been presented and the presenters in the Eminent Southeastern Psychologists Symposia are listed in Table 2.

Despite the difficulty of defining eminence, at least some of the attributes of eminent psychologists can be identified. Eminence may be demonstrated by having an outstanding publication record or an outstanding grant record; by having made outstanding contributions to education in psychology or to the application of psychology; or by having provided outstanding service to psychology.

In addition to being eminent, the psychologists about whom papers are presented must have some connection with the southeast. The person should have been in the southeast for a substantial part of her or his career, should have been born in the southeast, should have been educated in the southeast, or should have contributed to a southeastern organization, particularly the SEPA. Papers about both living and deceased people may be presented in the Symposium, no award or certificate is connected with inclusion in the Symposium.

The chairs and co-chairs who have organized the symposia and have been moderators of the symposia are listed in Table 3.
